Cave Diving and Contemporary Philosophy
Exploring the Caves of the Yucatán
Diving with Plato (Short Film, 2011)
A few years ago, I went cave diving in the limestone systems of Mexico’s Yucatán. With coral reefs in decline, these submerged caves offered a different kind of wonder. My guide and I entered before dawn, moving carefully—because in cave diving, one sudden motion can stir silt, erase visibility, and turn disorientation into danger.
Inside, there were submerged stalactites, vast columns, air pockets threaded with roots, shifting thermoclines—an otherworldly landscape revealed in silence.
I find myself thinking about caves again. Not physical ones, but the spaces we inhabit mentally—where personal realities, conspiracy theories, and “alternative facts” take shape. These caves can feel endless, self-contained, even comforting. Why leave, when everything you believe is already inside? Is there even a way out?
I remember not wanting to surface from those dives. The beauty was absorbing, the water warm, the experience immersive. But eventually, the air runs low. You have to leave.
